Andrew King is 2008 Scholarship Competition Winner!

On April 4, Andrew King, pianist, student of John Spradling, was declared the CNYAMT 2008 Scholarship Competition winner. A versatile, well-rounded musician, Andrew will major in vocal studies in his college years. The field of 4 applicants was very strong this year, and included a violist, a soprano, and another pianist. Joyce Ucci assisted Patricia DeAngelis, chairperson for the day. The excellent adjudicator was Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner, conductor and director of wind ensembles at Cornell University.

To Andrew and John, we wish to say BRAVO! Congratulations and best of luck to Andrew as he continues his studies. I know we are all proud Andrews many accomplishments and of all the competitors in this years competition and of all our seniors going off to college, whether or not they continue to study music or simply enjoy a life long patronage of our art.

Andrew's Biography:

Andrew King, 18, is a senior at Jamesville DeWitt High School and is the son of Maren and John King of DeWitt. He began studying piano at age six with Donna Lacey and has been a student of John Spradling for the past six years.

Andrew was a winner of the Civic Morning Musicals/Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerto Competition in 2008 and was a finalist in the 2006 competition. He was the winner of the inaugural Patricia DeAngelis Youth Piano Festival held at LeMoyne College in October 2006. He has also participated in the CNYAMT solo piano competitions, concerto competitions at Ithaca College and SUNY Geneseo, and the Chopin Society of the Thousand Islands Piano Competition. In 2007 Andrew was the piano soloist with the LeMoyne College String Ensemble. In 2007 Andrew was the winner of the CNYAMT High School Vocal Competition- Eleventh Grade division.

Andrew Enjoys making music in a variety of ways. He sang for four years with the Syracuse Children's Chorus, is a member of the Jamesville DeWitt High School Select Choir and InAchord, and recently participated in All-State Mixed Chorus. He has taken part in the school musicals since 4th grade and this spring performed the role of Tony in the Jamesville DeWitt High School's performance of West Side Story.

Andrew is in the midst of college auditions and plans to continue his musical studies as a Vocal Performance major in college.
